Living in Austin has so many advantages, not only are stores within walking distance but there are endless entertainment options and incredible food as well. Living in a big city can also have some disadvantages too, like the fact that housing is at a premium rate so you might end up having to live in a smaller space. This doesn't have to be a problem though; with minimalism, smart storage solutions, and organization, you can have a beautiful home to live in, even if it's a bit smaller than you are used to.

The latest trends include ways to create storage and make small places work for you. Some people are even buying tiny homes and scaling down their personal belongings. If your laundry room is in your kitchen or bathroom or you feel overwhelmed by your stuff taking up too much space, don't worry! You can be organized and have the home you have always dreamed of.

Laundry

If you have a small area for your laundry, open shelving above the washer and dryer may be a good alternative. You can purchase baskets or bins to store laundry soap, fabric softener and stain removal sprays. These bins can also be used for plastic bags, cleaning or pet supplies. Hang a few hooks on the wall to use for items such as umbrellas, sweaters, mop, broom and for clothing that cannot be dried in the dryer. A counter installed above a front loading washer and dryer can create more space for folding.

Kitchen

A small kitchen can be a challenging area to condense down, but not impossible. This is where you might consider scaling down your belongings, perhaps getting rid of some of your extra coffee mugs or other things you don't use. If you have a mix-matched drawer full of utensils, go through and pick the ones that match and get rid of the rest. Take a look at your appliances – do you need a small and a large blender? Do you need a waffle maker? What items are you really using? Sort your plastic containers and keep only the ones that have lids, recycle the others.

Shelving

Open shelving or smaller upper cabinets can also be a great solution to add extra storage and organization to your small space. You can use these to either store items you don’t use often, or glasses that you want to display. Smaller upper cabinets on top of your existing can also create a more dramatic feel to your kitchen, adding a touch of elegance where there wasn't before. Consider adding shelves in your hallways or any small nook to place things like books or DVDs.
