Have you ever heard of Scandinavian Design? This interior design style is becoming more and more popular, but what exactly is it? It does have kind of a strange name, is it worth the hype? How can you achieve this sought after look? This article should help give you some design inspiration and have your creative juices flowing so that you're more ready to start transforming your space and maybe having a Scandanavian Style home of your own.
The biggest essential in Scandanavian Design is minimalism and a very neutral starting palate. Black and white should be the predominant colors of your space, only adding color where it comes from natural textures like leather, fur, wood, and plants. Scandinavian style always looks simple but focuses also on functionality and comfort, it is the perfect mix of cozy but modern. Here are some ideas you can try to be on your way to having a more Scandanavian style home:
You see this a lot in Scandinavian homes and living rooms. This big round mirror, usually with a very thin metal frame. Not only does it make any space feel more open, but a mirror also adds light and dimension to a room. It can be the perfect decor in a living room or entryway, plus it adds that nice modern touch.
The best way to add a touch of color in Scandanavian design is with some colorful pillows. Although they are usually mostly muted colors, feel free to go with what ever fun pillows catch your eye. Make sure you stick with a fairly coherent scheme so that you don't end up with a rainbow room. Try to stick with one or two predominant pops of color. You can use these in your bedroom, living room and even a sunroom if you have one.
Since Scandanavian design relies so heavily on a very simplistic palate, using nature and natural tones and textures is the best way to brighten up and liven your space. There are so many fun ways to add texture and color using natural materials like hemp, wool, concrete or leather. Try looking for fun natural artwork, concrete side tables or lamps, hemp baskets, or cowhide pillows!
This is one of my personal favorite touches that always makes a living room feel significantly more welcoming. A ladder with an array of blankets on the side of any room invites guests to come stay awhile while providing a functional clean-lined solution to storing extra blankets. Make sure you get blankets that use soft and use natural materials.
The last Scandinavian design idea to try is adding some plants to your home! Don't worry if you have a black thumb like me, you can always buy fake plants that are much easier to maintain or try your hands at growing some succulents. If you decide on the natural plant direction, make sure your plants can live in a place where they can get plenty of sunlight and don't forget to water them too; dead plants do not help to make your space feel more inviting!
